About Nicole

Dr. Oneyear was a graduate research assistant at the Institute for Transportation for six years and now serves as a research scientist. Her areas of expertise include rural curve safety, rural intersection safety, low-cost safety improvements, safety data, work zone safety and operations, using naturalistic driving data to assess safety and operations, microsimulation, and automated enforcement. She also works with the National Center for Rural Road Safety, helping it to develop, update, and provide training related to safety on rural roads.

Selected Research Projects

  • National Center for Rural Road Safety (WTI and FHWA). This project involved identifying gaps in training for state and local agencies related to rural safety and then creating, updating, or tailoring trainings for rural agencies and various audiences. Trainings included FHWA Low-Cost Safety Improvements, FHWA Road Safety 365, FWHA Roadside Safety, Reading the Roadway, Systemic Safety Project Selection Tool, Introduction to the Safety Analysis Process, Maintaining a Safer Roadway, and Take Action Now. These trainings met NHI adult learning standards and were offered in a mix of in-person, virtual, and train-the-trainer formats. In addition to the trainings developed, (2015–present).
  • Synthesis of Transverse Rumble Stripes at Rural Stop Controlled Intersections (Iowa DOT). This project involves performing a literature review on the effectiveness of transverse rumble strips as well as a synthesis of state DOT policies related to transverse rumble strips at rural stop-controlled intersections. Additionally, an analysis will be performed to determine benefit-cost ratios of various scenarios of transverse rumble strip implementation. (2021–present).
  • Highway Safety Information System (HSIS) (FHWA through VHB). This project involves providing insights on data needs for various safety analyses and fulfilling researcher data requests (2021–present).
  • Workzone GO Team (Iowa DOT). This project involves identifying known work zone crashes as well as using various means to identify additional work zone crashes, which were not coded as such. Additionally, relevant work zone configuration data are collected through video, still images, project plans, and interviews with Iowa DOT staff to categorize the work zone characteristics that are associated with work zone crashes (2021–present).
  • BTSCRP BTS-09: Influence of Infrastructure Design on Distracted Driving (TRB/BTSCRP). This project developed a safety framework for evaluating the effect of infrastructure elements on driver distraction. Proof-of-concept studies were completed including utilizing SHRP2 NDS data to evaluate the effect of overhead dynamic message signs and rail crossings on driver distraction (2019–2021).
  • Enhancing Conspicuity for Standard Signs and Retroreflectivity Strips on Posts (FHWA through VHB). This project collected and analyzed before and after speed data to evaluate several low-cost treatments, including a curve warning beacon, stop sign beacon, and speed limit flags (2019–2021).
  • SHRP2 Safety Data to Support Highway Safety: Assessing Driver Behavior at Rural Intersections (FHWA through the BAA). This project is evaluating how drivers negotiate rural high speed intersections using roadway factors, environmental factors, and driver behaviors such as where they are focusing their attention, the role of distraction, and how age and gender may play a role (2015–2021).
  • Use of SHRP2 NDS Data to Evaluate Roadway Departure Characteristics Phase 1 and 2 (FHWA and AASHTO through the IAP). This project evaluated speed and lane position in relation to roadway, environmental, and driver behavioral (e.g., driver distraction and glance location) characteristics. Additional models of crash risk, including driver distraction and glance location as dependent variables, are also being developed (2014–2020).
  • Evaluation of Cedar Rapids Red Light Camera Program (City of Cedar Rapids). This project evaluated the automated enforcement program and developed a toolbox of red light running countermeasures (2009–2011).
  • Evaluation of Electronic Speed Limit Signs on US 30 (Iowa DOT). This project evaluated the effectiveness of an electronic speed limit sign in a school zone based on collected speed data before and after installation of the sign (2007–2011).
