About the research

The transportation industry is evolving, and the deployment of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications has the potential to serve as a massive test-bed for the internet of things. Vehicles will be communicating with other vehicles, infrastructures, non-motorized vehicles, and possibly other commercial service providers. The infrastructure will be communicating also to enable seamless handshakes when vehicles cross jurisdictional boundaries. Each of these new exchanges necessitate established data standards to enable vendor-neutral connected technologies.

Independent data standards have been developed, for various entities; however, these are not designed for seamless integration. Both private and public entities have a role to ensure these standards are established and followed in any data stream that is being generated in the space of the transportation internet of things.

The focus of this project is to explore and synthesize the data standards that apply to the exchange of data between entities related to the transportation industry that are pertinent to the focus of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
