The Midwest Transportation Center hosts and/or sponsors a variety of conferences, workshops, and other training events, which bring students, industry leaders, and researchers from across the country together to focus on transportation topics and research implementation.
Mid-Continent Transportation Research Symposium
August 16–17, 2017, Ames, Iowa
As part of the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University, the Midwest Transportation Center partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Midwest Regional UTC to host this symposium in Ames, Iowa, in alternate years.
This year, the symposium provided an opportunity for transportation professionals from the Midwest and beyond to learn about advancements and applications in their fields and future directions for research. As suggested by this year’s theme—New Ideas, Better Lives—a major focus of the event was on research implementation and practice-ready results.
2017 Traffic and Safety Forum

The purpose of the 2017 Traffic and Safety Forum is to enable traffic and safety engineering professionals to learn about new and innovative systems and processes, share individual experiences, and collectively address issues of interest. In recent years, representatives have attended from cities, counties, consultants, universities, and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Iowa Evening Reception at 2018 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting
January 9, 2018, Washington, DC
Transportation researchers and other staff from throughout the United States attended the Iowa Evening reception at the 2018 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. ISU’s Institute for Transportation and the Iowa Department of Transportation were the lead sponsors of this yearly event. Other hosts were the ISU Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering and the University of Iowa’s National Advanced Driving Simulator.
“The reception is a good avenue to inform transportation professionals across the nation about the projects, programs, and priorities taking place in Iowa,” said Shauna Hallmark, MTC/InTrans director.
Bridge Decks with Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Overlay

During this workshop, participants were exposed to a variety of topics, including an introduction to ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), past bridge projects, accelerated bridge construction, design of UHPC members, UHPC as an overlay material, and machine placement of UHPC overlay.
The workshop also included an field visit as well as presentations from researchers at the ISU’s Institute for Transportation.
2018 Innovations in Transportation Conference
October 9 & 10, 2018, Ames, Iowa
This event calls transportation professionals from local and state agencies, academia, and business and industry to learn about the future of transportation and current practical applications.
Speakers from around the nation are there to engage participants in contemporary topics such as mobility and accessibility, connected and autonomous vehicles, organizational change, and data analytics.
This day-and-a-half meeting was is hosted by the Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa State University’s Institute for Transportation.
